New Bedford Symphony Orchestra Returning to Live Performances – wbsm.com

For the first time in the last 18 months, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra will return to live performances at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center beginning this weekend, Saturday, September 18.
"I'm so excited to welcome our live audience back to the Zeiterion after such a long time," exclaimed Yaniv Dinur, Music Director of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, which will host a six-concert series through May of 2022. "It's like a dream. When you're preforming in a concert hall surrounded by other people and sounds, who are experiencing the same thing, there's synergy."
He said the NBSO also earned another distinction.
"Through the pandemic, I believe we were one of the very few orchestras in the United States who had a full season," he said. "It was great that we were able to stream the music to our loyal audience at home, but you can't compare it to playing before a live audience."
To celebrate the NBSO's return to the stage, Dinur has something planned that will speak to the heart of the city.
"New Bedford is a famous port city, and we will open the 2021-2022 concert series celebrating composer Adolphus Hailstork's 80th birthday with his colorful, jazzy and beautiful 'American Port of Call' that is brilliantly orchestrated," he said. "It's an enjoyable combination remindful of a little West Side Story, a little Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris, where the audience will feel the liveliness, chaos and excitement of an American port city."
"Then, incredible violinist Karen Gomyo performs with the orchestra in Tchaikovsky's violin concerto, where the melodies and virtuosity make it one of the most popular pieces in the repertoire," he added. "And finally, Sibelius' uplifting Fifth Symphony, that is like a hymn to the human spirit, and the perfect piece to celebrate the return of live music before a live audience!"
Please sustain that applause for another moment, folks. Maestro Dinur made known some exciting news.
"We have a new member of the family – a new daughter!" he said. "So now we have two daughters: JoJo, three years old, and and Alexandra, who is three months old and who was born on my birthday!"
So strike up the band and get ready for a return to live music.
